Common Core Toughens Math Assessments

April 4, 2013

Chicago, IL –The Common Core standard, originally introduced five years ago, has now been adopted by over 40 states and has finally made its way into both public and private school assessments. As part of its deal to receive a waiver from NCLB sanctions, the State of Illinois agreed to incorporate Common Core content into its assessments two years sooner than originally planned. In March 2013, 20-30% of ISAT items reflected Common Core standards. This percentage will increase further in 2014 to 40-50% and in 2015 the ISAT will be 100% Common Core compliant. Because the Common Core has become a national standard, private school students who take the Terra Nova, Stanford and Iowa will also face more rigorous Common Core test items as test publishers become Common Core compliant.
